Ideal for game days, trips to Florence, or simply to show your enthusiasm in everyday life.

History and cultural significance

The roots of Calcio Storico date back to the 16th century. Particularly famous is the game of 1530, which took place in Piazza Santa Croce during the siege by Emperor Charles V's troops – as a brave sign of the Florentines' indomitability.

After a long hiatus, the sport was revived in 1930 and has since been a firm fixture in Florence's cultural calendar. To this day, historical Florentine football stands for pride, community, and the city's deep connection to its own history.

Teams and Colors

Four teams compete, each representing a historic Florentine district:

  • Santa Croce – Azzurri (Blue)
  • Santo Spirito – Bianchi (White)
  • Santa Maria Novella – Rossi (Red)
  • San Giovanni – Verdi (Green)

Each team consists of 27 players, divided into goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders, and forwards. The team colors not only define the playing field but also the festive atmosphere in the city.

Rules, Field, and Gameplay

Calcio Storico is played in two semi-finals and a final, traditionally held on June 24th – the feast day of the city's patron saint, San Giovanni. A game lasts 50 minutes without a break. The ball is made of leather, heavier than a football, and can be played with hands and feet. The aim is to throw the ball into the opponent's net, scoring a "Caccia." If the ball goes over the net, the opposing team receives half a point.

Physical contact is part of the game: punches, kicks, and throws are allowed, with the exception of headbutts, attacks from behind, or outnumbered attacks against individuals. The game is officiated by a head referee, several linesmen, and the "Master of the Field." The game is played in Piazza Santa Croce, which is completely covered with sand for the event. Temporary stands around the playing field create an unparalleled atmosphere.

The festival and the atmosphere in the city

The games are part of a multi-day festival that transforms Florence into a historical open-air spectacle. A magnificent parade with over 500 participants in Renaissance costumes marches through the streets. Drummers, flag-wavers, and the "Lords of the Field" open the tournament. In the alleys, bars, and squares, fans and teams celebrate until late into the night. The final traditionally ends with a fireworks display over the city – an unforgettable moment for players and spectators.
