Revive the Spirit of the Hawks. The Hanau Hawks were among the first American Football teams in Germany and thrilled their many thousands of fans at their playoff games. Get a piece of this glorious Hanau football history.
AFC Hanau Hawks e.V., a German American Football club, was founded in 1979 and was one of the oldest clubs of its kind in Germany. Unfortunately, the club had to be dissolved in 1999 due to financial difficulties. The Hanau Hornets were founded as a successor club and also took over the Hawks' Bundesliga license.
The Bundesliga team Hanau Hawks once delighted the masses and attracted thousands of fans to their home games at the Herbert-Dröse-Stadion.
In the exciting game against the Cologne Crocodiles, which was played in July 1994 as the EMS Bowl, the Hanau team even broke the attendance record, although they ultimately lost the game. Exactly 8,571 spectators filled the stands of the Herbert-Dröse-Stadion as two of Germany's best teams at the time competed against each other: The Hawks led the South Division of the Bundesliga, while the Cologne team was tied on points with the second-placed team from Düsseldorf in the North Division. This summit meeting was about more than just prestige for both teams, because shortly before the end of the season, it was equally crucial for the Hanau and Cologne teams to secure a good starting position for the upcoming play-offs for the German championship.
Overall, the Hawks were ahead of their time in many areas. While today in the European League of Football and German Football League there is speculation about whether Red Bull could be persuaded to sponsor, the Red Bull logo already adorned the Hanau jerseys back then. Power – Party and children's attractions were just as much a part of the matchday program as live bands. Unforgettable how, after the game, even one of the Hawks' stars, Gregory "Sweets" Oliver, would grab the microphone himself, and the ladies would be at his feet. Other great American football stars such as Tuli Mateialona or Reggie Williams also played for the Hanau Hawks back then.
During their 17 seasons in the Bundesliga and two years (1983 and 1992) in the second Bundesliga, the Hawks reached the German Bowl semifinals four times, but never made it to the final. In 1995 and 1997, they won the Bundesliga's South Division. The Hawks only missed the playoffs four times. Before their dissolution in 1999, the Hawks also celebrated international successes, such as winning the Federations Cup against the Graz Giants in 1998 in their own stadium – the predecessor of the EFAF Cup.
