We take a look back at football history and review the 1980s. Three decades ago, a team from the Second Bundesliga caused a sensation: the Fellbach Sioux. This dynamic team surprised with spectacular successes against leading teams of their time. They managed to defeat the Darmstadt Diamonds 16:15, a team that had not suffered a defeat for almost two years prior. Another proud moment was the 29:14 victory against their local rivals, the Stuttgart Scorpions, who became personal friends over the years. Not to forget, the impressive 28:8 triumph over the Wiesbaden Phantoms. A special feature of the Fellbach Sioux was their utilization of local military potential: many US soldiers from the area, including players with high-level college experience, strengthened the team.

The roots of this team date back to 1984 when former Stuttgart Scorpions national players such as Ewald Fischer and Stefan Fegg, as well as legendary quarterback Gunther "Doc" Michl, who still played in the GFL at over 60 years old, founded the Sioux. After their promotion as champions of the Oberliga in 1986, they played in the Second Bundesliga Mitte from 1987 to 1990. Despite their fighting spirit and commitment, they narrowly missed promotion to the First League on the last match day. The Sioux provided several national players and participants at the 1989 World Games in Karlsruhe.

One of the most famous players was Ajay Blake, who was formerly an active linebacker for the Buffalo Bills and brought valuable experience to the Sioux team. In addition to athletic competition, the Sioux were also involved in social campaigns, including the "Save the Seals" campaign. Their efforts were recognized by prominent sponsors such as Coca Cola and McDonald's, as well as by the support of local sponsors, and members could enjoy an exclusive plastic membership card.

The Fellbach team was very innovative and organized numerous charity games such as "Shrine Bowls," campaigns like "Save the Seals," and much more. Since there were no cheerleaders in the region in the 80s, the Sioux brought in the Düsseldorf Pantherettes, who were pioneers in cheerleading in Germany at the time. Thus, fans in Fellbach experienced the fascination of cheerleading live in their own stadium early on.

The Fellbach Sioux were also part of the cultural exchange in football and participated in All-Star Games against US Air Force teams, such as the Ramstein Rams. Furthermore, they faced the US All-Star teams with the BaWü Allstars, where they even had the opportunity to play under the direction of NFL coaching legend Sam Rutigliano. These events not only provided exciting encounters but also unforgettable moments in the history of German American football.
