In 1905, youths from an industrial district in southeast Minneapolis laid the groundwork for a team that would compete in both the local football and baseball scenes. Originally arranged by weight class, the team experienced an initial peak when they claimed the city championship title in the 130 lb class in 1908 and competed in the next higher category the following year.
In 1921, the Minneapolis Marines joined the league then known as the American Professional Football Association, which was renamed the National Football League just one year later. A significant aspect of the Marines was their location in the Midwest of the USA, far from the then-dominant teams on the East Coast and from the Great Lakes region. This location underscored the growing popularity of the game in various regions of the country.
With the hiring of Frank J. Hammer as team manager in 1910, the professionalization of the squad began. By offering prize money for games and initiating fundraising campaigns, the financial resources were significantly strengthened. The confrontations with the Minneapolis Beavers for supremacy in the city developed into an exciting back-and-forth. In response to repeated defeats in the fight for the city championship, the Marines increasingly reinforced their ranks with experienced college players, a strategy that paid off. From 1913 to 1917, the team won the state championship every year, thus earning the privilege of competing against the All-Stars of the University of Minnesota. Although the initial duels were lost, 1920 was a turning point when the first tie occurred. Further victories followed from 1921 to 1923.
Important figures in the history of the Marines included manager Ole Haugsrud, who later participated in the founding of the Minnesota Vikings, as well as Joe Brandy, a pioneer who not only played but also coached and owned the team.
The team's steady rise led to Beavers players switching sides and more frequent competitions against interregional opponents, which earned the Marines the nickname "Pride of the Northwest." When participation in a Nebraska-based league fell through in 1921, the Marines instead accepted the offer from the American Professional Football Association, which later became the NFL. However, only moderate success was achieved in the first years in the APFA.
A curious anecdote about the Minneapolis Marines is that during their active time in the NFL, no games were played against the Green Bay Packers, even though both teams originated from the Great Lakes region and existed concurrently for a period.
Continuous failures from 1924 onwards led to a decline in spectator interest, with fans' favor shifting towards the collegiate Minnesota Golden Gophers. Despite relocation plans to Rochester by Johnny Dunn, who had led the team since 1915, they had to take a break in 1925 and could not return in 1926 due to financial hurdles. Aside from friendly matches in 1927 and 1928, which ended without victories, the team historically faded into insignificance.
Rube Ursella: A key figure for the Marines, Rube Ursella was known not only as a versatile player who could be deployed in multiple positions but also as the driving force behind the team's organization. Ursella acted as both a player and later a player-coach, significantly influencing the team's development in the early professional years of football. His contributions ranged from tactical acumen to individual performance on the field.
Joe Pahl: Known for his skills as a quarterback, Pahl was a vital offensive component for the Marines. His game intelligence and leadership qualities allowed him to direct his team's play, and he contributed to several significant victories for the team in the early 1920s.
Eddie Novak: As a powerful fullback with excellent rushing ability, Novak shaped the Marines' ground attacks. He distinguished himself through his assertiveness and his good eye for gaps in the opposing defense, making him one of the team's consistent offensive weapons.
Dick King: In the defensive backfield, King was a key component and responsible for numerous deflected passes and tackles. His agility and tactical understanding of pass protection provided stability to the Minneapolis Marines' defense.
