American Football in Germany: The Era of the Monheim Sharks
The history of American Football in Germany began in November 1979 with an untameable football fever that spread from Frankfurt and Düsseldorf to Monheim. In Düsseldorf, the first two teams, the Panthers and the Bulldozers, were founded, followed by teams in other major cities. Young passion also led to the founding of a club in Monheim: the Monheim Sharks in their distinctive orange and black uniform.
In the early days of the Sharks, they suffered a bitter 78-0 defeat against the Düsseldorf Panthers – a clear sign of the strong competition. But the Sharks were not deterred, and in 1982 they joined the newly founded second league, where they competed against Cologne and Bonn, among others. Later, a cheerleading squad supplemented the team, and the first major success was not long in coming: a 40-27 victory against the Hilden Hurricanes in front of 1,200 cheering fans in the Shell Stadium.
After two more years in the second league, the Sharks were promoted to the Bundesliga in 1984. The first Bundesliga season brought defeats, but also the realization that they were indeed capable of playing with the big teams. A league reform saved them from relegation, and they played in Group North B against teams like the Berlin Adler and Essen Cardinals.
An impressive second place and the associated first playoff qualification marked the highlight in 1987. Although the Sharks were eliminated in the quarterfinals, they showed an impressive performance and solidified their reputation in German American Football.
In the following years, the focus was on rebuilding the team. First division experience ultimately led to further successful games and playoffs in 1990. The 1991 season was characterized by victories against old rivals like the Düsseldorf Panthers and ended with a dramatic victory against the Noris Rams, which brought the Sharks into the semi-finals for the first time – a place among the top four teams in Germany.
However, the tide turned and the 1992 season proved to be significantly more challenging, although the Sharks still reached the playoffs again. 1993 and the following years were marked by struggles against relegation and constant sporting challenges. Successes mixed with defeats and injury problems, until finally in 1994 the end of the MONHEIM SHARKS seemed sealed.
But like a phoenix from the ashes, the determination not to let the club die led to the re-establishment of the Sharks. They started at the bottom, fought their way through the Landesliga and finally rose successively between 1995 and 1997. In 1998, the Regionalliga season began with a clear victory against the Tecklenburg Silverbacks and demonstrated that the spirit of the Sharks was still alive.
Famous players like Werner Hippler in 1993 and Steve Callhoun in 1998 and coaches like Frank Pfliegner celebrated successes with the Monheim Sharks. Many other notable players have the Sharks as part of their resume.
