In 1905, a football team was founded, which later became known as the Congerville Athletic Club. The Muncie Flyers received their name in reference to their hometown, Muncie, Indiana. The name "Flyers" is likely an allusion to speed and agility – qualities highly valued in sports and reflecting the spirit of the era.

In 1911, this team officially entered professional league play and, under the leadership of Head Coach Earl Ball, celebrated winning the Indiana City Championship in 1913. However, participation in the competition was interrupted in 1918 due to the US involvement in World War I.

As part of the historical roots of American Football, the athletes, now known as the Muncie Flyers, became one of the initiating clubs of the American Professional Football Association (APFA), today's NFL, in 1920. Nevertheless, the inaugural season proved challenging for the Flyers: they played only one game and suffered a clear 0:45 defeat against the Rock Island Independents. Curiously, the subsequent game against the Decatur Staleys was canceled, whereupon the players moved to other local teams. Another setback occurred when the game against the Dayton Triangles also could not take place, which meant an early end to the season.

A year later, in 1921, the Flyers continued their efforts but met with further disappointments, losing to the Cincinnati Celts and the Evansville Crimson Giants. After failing to score any points in these games again, they finally withdrew from the APFA. With this step, the Muncie Flyers went down in the annals of professional football as the team that never managed to score a single point in the NFL. Despite continuing for a few more years, the club was then dissolved in 1926.

The Muncie Flyers are more of a footnote in the long history of American Football, and the team did not produce many well-known players, especially because its time in the American Professional Football Association (APFA), the precursor to the NFL, was brief. In fact, due to the team's short and less successful history, extensive records about the team and its players are lacking.

However, some historical sources mention a few players who played for the Muncie Flyers, including:

  1. Cooney Checkaye – He is one of the few Muncie Flyers players whose name is regularly mentioned, possibly due to his unique name.
  2. Ray E. Thomas – Occasionally mentioned in historical lineups, he may have been part of the team during its short lifespan.
